タテ棒とヨコ棒の太さが逆転している、あまのじゃくな可笑しみの漂う書体。しかしよくよく見ると、どこか優しく、人間くさいのだ。

「サン理容室」は1974年に開業したお店。「サン」という書体は一代目で現店主でもある、冨田さん自身がデザインしたそうだ。「意味は"太陽"。お年寄りから子どもさんまでふらっと寄ってもらえる、親しみのある明るいイメージがいいと思いました。別の店で職人として働きながら独立を考えているときから、屋号や書体は考えていました。実は、はじめは先のとんがっている書体を作って使っていたんですが、やっぱり鋭すぎちゃって。始めの書体は自分の気分で描いていたので、今度は自分でルールをつくって、そのルールに則って作ってみた。それが今の書体です。」そのルールとはタテ線を細く、ヨコ線を太くする、という普通の書体とは逆の法則を持つもの。線の端は緩やかなラウンドを持つ。当初の理念である明るく親しみのあるイメージにぴったりの書体ができあがった。
“Sun Barber Shop” opened in 1974. Mr. Tomita, the first and current owner of the shop, designed the typeface “Sun” himself. “The meaning of the word ‘Sun’ is the sun. I wanted to give my shop a friendly and cheerful image that would attract everyone from the elderly to children. I had been thinking about the name and typeface of the shop since I was thinking of going independent while working as a craftsman at another shop. In fact, I started out using a typeface I had created with a sharp point, but it was too sharp as I thought. The first typeface was based on my mood, next time, I made up my own rules and tried to create a typeface according to those rules. That is the typeface I am using now.” That rules are the opposite of normal typefaces. Vertical lines should be thin and horizontal lines should be thick. The edges of the lines are gently rounded. The result is a typeface that perfectly matches the bright and friendly image of the original concept.
